Happy Birthday Akira Ifukube!

Today is 107th birthday of Japanese composer Akira Ifukube. He is famous for his work on the soundtrack for the “Godzilla” movies in 1950s.

He was born in 1914 in Kushiro, Hokkaido, Japan. Being a passionate listener of European music, he twisted his nationality into original composition. He got the idea after listening to Russian composer Stravinsky’s “The Rite of Spring” in the age of 14 years in 1913.

In 1935, Akira went to Hokkaido University for studying forestry. There he wrote “Japanese Rhapsody”. In 1947, he had released film scores of more than 250. His career rose better in 1954 when he wrote the soundtrack for “Godzilla”.

Apart from it, he had also been president of the Tokyo College of Music in 1976. He published a book on theory entitled “Orchestration”. Japanese Government honoured both Order of Culture and Order of the Sacred Treasure to Akira.
